The Department of Education building, created in the 1900s by NSW government architect George McRae, is where Capella Sydney is located.

Capella Sydney has finally opened its doors after a seven-year refurbishment, taking up an entire city block near Circular Quay, the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge.

The building, which is a part of the city’s famed Sandstone Precinct, has undergone a painstaking restoration and redesign by Pontiac Land. The 192 exquisite guestrooms and suites of Capella Sydney are distributed over nine levels.

Luxury textiles, freestanding baths, Italian Frette linen, and a custom assortment of vegan, environmentally friendly toiletries created in collaboration with Haeckels are all present and correct in the guestrooms and suites. The Farrer Place foyer, which is decorated with purchased and commissioned art, is where guests check in.

Work by Australian artists Judy Watson, Otis Hope Carey, Elise Cakebread, and Georgia Bisley are among the pieces in the ground-floor collection, which is capped off by a huge robotic lighting installation by the Dutch art collective DRIFT. The DRIFT piece, titled Meadow, is suspended in the hotel’s main social area.

Its expansive lounge space, now called as Aperture, is located in the original courtyard of the old building and serves as the hub from where guests may access all of the hotel’s services. Also, there are two other places to drink and eat, including the historic Brasserie 1930 and McRae Bar, both of which serve food created in association with The Bentley Group.

The 20-metre heated indoor pool on level six offers the ideal wellness experience right in the middle of the city, and visitors may also indulge in restorative treatments at the Auriga Spa.
